Assessment: Assessment 23-24

2023-24 Assessment

Assessment Priorities for 2023-24

Overall Approach
  • Focus on ways to improve teaching and learning NOT on reporting information.  The reporting information should inform what areas to discuss for continual improvement and sharing of ideas
  • Given our cycle of closing the loop the following year, not all work needs to be finalized this academic year!
PLO Assessment
  • ILO #5:  describe the ways in which social, economic, or environmental sustainability depends on their own and the collective contributions of a diversity of ideas and people
    • Departments review Curriculum Maps to identify courses
    • Departments review SLOs in those courses, plan to revise MCS as needed.
    • Departments review faculty assignments, rubrics, approaches, plan to revise as needed.
    • Connect work to Sustainability Project President Kremenek mentioned at welcome back meeting
    • Chairs report on progress/work at end of the year

SUNY Gen Ed Assessment
  • Content Areas: Social Sciences, Communication, World/Global, Diversity
    • Departments review courses that meet these areas
    • Departments review faculty SLOs in this courses, plan to revise MCS as needed.
    • Departments review assignments, rubrics, approaches in those courses, plan to revise as needed.
    • Chairs/Assessment Chair reports on progress/work at end of year

Closing the Loop on 2022-23

Closing the Loop on 2022-23 Assessment

Overall Approach
  • Reflect on the process from last year.  How could this process be better?  How could working within the department make the process easier, better, more meaningful?
  • Reflect on ways connecting to other departments or entities (CTC, SUNY Center for Professional Development, etc) may be helpful
  • Make appropriate changes based on assessment conversations
PLO Assessment
  • Department reviews PLO Assessment form submitted to Provost’s Office
  • Chairs amend form if needed based on feedback from faculty
  • Review and list possible changes to curriculum, MCS revisions, Curriculum Map, assignments, rubrics, and professional development as a result of the PLO assessment.
  • Establish schedule to implement appropriate changes
  • Chairs report back on changes at end of the year
SUNY Gen Ed Assessment
  • Departments review SUNY General Education Form
  • Review and list possible changes to MCS revisions, assignments, rubrics, and professional development as a result of the Gen Ed assessment
  • Chairs/Assessment Chair report back on changes at end of the year

Spring Opening Week Assessment Meeting

January 17 Assessment Meeting

Assessing ILO #5

  • Students will:  "describe the ways in which social, economic, or environmental sustainability depends on their own and the collective contributions of a diversity of ideas and people"

Does your program assess ILO #5?
  • DEISJ courses ARE sustainability courses.
  • Any class or unit addressing social issues, cultural diversity, economics, human rights, or environmental quality will map to ILO 5.
    • It is possible that you may need to tweak assignment(s).
  • Remember:  Only 1 (core) course needs to map to the PLO mapping to ILO 5.

Nov 8: Assessing ILO #5 Roundtable

Institutional Learning Outcome #5 reads: “Describe the ways in which social, economic, or environmental sustainability depends on their own and the collective contributions of a diversity of ideas and people.”  This meeting will provide a platform for a candid and constructive dialogue about how our various programs can contribute to this overarching institutional goal and assist instructors in identifying courses and assignments that best address those goals, especially for those programs in which the connection is less obvious.

Oct 25: Closing the Loop Roundtable

Led by assessment committee members Danielle Bethoney and Melissa Schmidt, these sessions will focus on closing the loop on last year’s assessment of ILO #3 (Use information, critical thinking, and the creative process to solve problems and reach conclusions.)

These sessions are an opportunity to discuss what went well with our assessment, what didn’t, and what we can do better this time around. We will also discuss how well SLOs map to PLOs and ILOs, and what changes might be needed to SLOs and Master Course Syllabi to make that mapping more seamless. For members of our adjunct faculty, you are welcome and encouraged to attend as well—these sessions will be a good opportunity to answer any questions you have, better prepare you for upcoming reporting, and better understand the assessment process and rationale.
