This page includes brainstorming ideas and links specific to the NURS225 essay. Please note that not all of the ideas presented here may end up working for your assignment, but may help you generate topics. It's a great idea to run your topic ideas past your reader, too. Keep in mind that the assignment focuses on the role of the professional nurse, NOT on something that affects the people nurses care for.
On this page you will find links to sources such as nursing association websites, current nursing journal articles, or academic books. Double-check the assignment requirements, but any of these sources should be suitable for your essay.
For links to specific nursing journal articles, use your myTC3 username and password to access the full text; some articles may be freely available online without a TC3 login.
This page is not exhaustive, but provides a starting point for you if you'd like to explore these topics or branch out to others.
The tabs across the top of this guide provide other useful information for nursing students, too.
Please contact Karla Block using the contact info on this page if you'd like to brainstorm other topic ideas or are having a hard time finding sources for your chosen topic - we can work together in person, virtually via Zoom or Teams, or by email as needed. One-on-one appointments are available where we can work together.
Browse these books for potential topic ideas. You can see the tables of contents or read more about the books by clicking on the links and scrolling to the Contents or Description sections.
General information about finding articles within the nursing field can be found on the Find Articles tab. Here are some specific tips related to finding articles for the the NURS208 paper. Also check out the Library Handouts for Nursing tab for nursing-related library handouts about finding articles, or see the two handouts linked below for information about how to get the full text of articles, as well as how to limit your search to current nursing journal articles.
If there's an article you need that we don't have in full-text, you can order it and we'll do our best to get it for you (most articles arrive within a day or two).
CINAHL is the recommended starting point to find current nursing journal articles. See the CINAHL tab for information about using CINAHL Headings to search by subject heading. This strategy may work well for the NURS208 paper since this strategy allows you to focus your search using the "ethical issues" subheading.
Main database for literature in nursing and allied health. Coverage is primarily journal articles but also includes some dissertations, continuing education modules, and more. For nursing, there is some overlap between CINAHL and MEDLINE. For help searching CINAHL (including limiting searches to current nursing journal articles), see our CINAHL Guide. (EBSCO)
Sometimes you may be unable to find enough current nursing journal articles using CINAHL. In that case, you're encouraged to work with Karla Block, the nursing librarian. You can also branch out to some of the library's other databases, which may have unique nursing content not found in CINAHL. A full list is available, with some good choices listed below.
Index of journal literature in clinical medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, public health, allied health, and the basic biomedical sciences. MEDLINE can also be searched using a publicly available free web interface called PubMed, which is a good choice for students once they leave Tompkins Cortland Community College. (EBSCO)
Full-text article database, containing millions of articles in subjects primarily across science disciplines such as biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology, chemistry, clinical medicine, nursing, engineering, veterinary medicine, and social sciences. (Elsevier)
Scholarly full-text journal index focusing on many medical disciplines, particularly nursing and allied health. (EBSCO)
This paper requires APA style - including formatting and citations. Your program will provide more detailed information and examples, but the library has additional resources to help you master APA style.
The library's APA Citation help guide provides links to handouts on citations and formatting (just how do you format those hanging indents, anyway?) plus information on citation tools available in the library's resources like CINAHL.
The resources listed below are good places to browse for current issues of interest to nurses.
