Nursing Subject Guide: NURS120

This guide includes resources specific to the NURS120 disease paper.  The paper requires you to use a specific number of professional sources, including a minimum number of current nursing journal articles (generally this means articles published in nursing journals--not other types of journals--within the last five years).  This guide includes information to help you choose a topic and get started finding sources that meet the criteria. The tabs across the top provide other useful links for nursing students.

Please contact Karla Block if you'd like to brainstorm topics ideas or are having a hard time finding sources for your chosen topic - we can work together in person, virtually via Zoom or Teams, or by email as needed.  One-on-one appointments are available where we can work on searching together.

Suggested Websites

The following are some suggested online professional-level sources that may be useful for the disease paper.

General Disease Books from the Library

Here are some general book recommendations for the disease paper.  Remember that your main source requirement for this paper is current nursing journal articles, but books can serve as additional professional sources. These books generally cover a variety of diseases in short sections and can be a good starting point. The list is not exhaustive and the library may have other relevant books too; some disease-specific books are listed elsewhere on this page. If we don't have a book or article that you need, you can request it and we'll do our best to get a copy for you.

APA Format and Citations

This paper requires APA style - including formatting and citations. Your program will provide more detailed information and examples, but the library has additional resources to help you master APA style.

The library's APA Citation help guide provides links to handouts on citations and formatting (just how do you format those hanging indents, anyway?) plus information on citation tools available in the library's resources like CINAHL.

Topic Ideas for NURS120

When choosing a topic for your disease paper, the main thing to keep in mind related to sources is that you will be required to use a specific number of current nursing journal articles; this means articles published in nursing journals specifically (as opposed to other types of journals like medical journals) within the last five years.

It makes sense to be sure you can find enough current nursing journal articles before you settle on a topic.  Some topics are rare without much literature at all, or may not have much written in the nursing literature (but a lot in journals in other disciplines).  Other topics may have ample nursing journal articles but that are older than the last five years.

You will also want to be sure you can cover the requirements listed in the rubric and have enough content for a paper of the required length.

You might find disease topic ideas by browsing the links below or the web links elsewhere on this page. We can also brainstorm ideas together.  It's a great idea to run your topic past your reader before spending too much time working on the paper, to make sure you are both on the same page.

Tips for Finding Articles

You must use a minimum number of current nursing journal articles for this paper.

General information about finding articles within the nursing field can be found on the Find Articles tab.  Also, here are some specific tips related to finding articles for the disease paper.

CINAHL is the recommended starting point to find current nursing journal articles.  If the library doesn't have the full text of an article you need, you can request it and we'll do our best to get it for you (at no charge to you).  See the handout below "How to Limit to Current Nursing Journal Articles" to make your CINAHL searches most effective for this paper.

Also see the CINAHL tab for information about using CINAHL Headings to do subject heading searches.  This strategy may work well for the disease paper to help you focus on your chosen disease, and also allows you to use subheadings to locate articles specific to pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatments, and more.

You're encouraged to work with Karla Block, the nursing librarian, for help with searching.
